Other Ranks - Submission
Other Ramblings - Some additional pieces of writing related to the making and showing of ĎOther Ranksí.Please share your photos with the Other Ranks project, using the form at the bottom of this page.
Iím asking you for Pictures of People...
People in uniform? For sure; very much so. Soldiers, the ordinary ranking soldiers, have borne the brunt of warfare through history. Please send me any photos you have of troops, in or out of uniform. Soldiers have notbeen the only victims of war, though, as we all know... Civilians, including women, children and old people, have also suffered in wars, and continue to do so.
Please send me photos of people. I donít mind what the picture is as long as it shows a person or people, someone who could, potentially, be a victim of war. Doesnít matter how old or new the picture is. Iíd love to use copies of your ancient family photos. Iím also interested in current pics, and everything in between. My aim is to represent as wide a cross section of humanity as possible, while keeping the main focus on soldiers.
My intention is to create a sea of faces - an endless mass of people - to provoke consideration of the massive human cost of warfare, now, and historically.
Iím using the amassed pictures for the flooring of the installation. It is important to stress that there is nothing disrespectful about this. It is intended to make visitors think about how the ĎWar Monsterí tramples on humanity. People moving through the installation will find themselves having to tread on human faces. When sending your pictures, it must be with your consent to my printing them and pasting them to the floor.
The point of doing this is to spark a sense of grief and horror in the visitor. Far from being insulting or offensive to those depicted, it is rather to be seen as an honouring of their sacrifice, and a recognition of the pain that every human being experiences in violent and frightening situations.
In short, it is an act of remembrance and homage.
Please do share your photos with me. They are important to the Other Ranks installation.
Thank you very much!
You can upload your image in several formats - the server can handle jpeg, png or gif files.
Now comes the legalese. Hereís a standard release form which will allow me the right to use your pictures. However, if youíre surprised at its very bossy tone please donít worry. Iíll only be using your photos for this project, in the way Iíve described. I might also use images from this project to build on Other Ranks, in the cause of assisting ex-service personnel, and to promote my own work, in the future. I wonít use them for any different purpose though and my airs and successors are, at time of writing, 3 and 6 years old; they donít want to make free with your photos either. The agreement is simply Googleís answer to a photo release form; Thanks for bearing with it.
Please note that youíre not giving me rights over your photos other than the non- exclusive right to use it for this project.
